2023 Mens Club Championships

Stroke event for overall Men's club championship & all grades championships played as matchplay rounds starting with the best eight qualifiers from each grade for men.

Sunday 29th October 2023 Finals

Mens A-grade

Shaun Dawson def Chantha Kong 2&1.

An absolute epic.

Chantha the top qualifier and 4-time champion, took on the number 3 Shaun Dawson, who upset defending champion, Yungbok Kim to earn his finals spot. Chantha playing to a 3 handicap and Shaun off 5 both remain in fine form after a season of public course and Golf SA pennants competitions.

Chantha had the early advantage and was 2 up through 18 holes. That margin stretched to 3 shortly afterwards, but from there Shaun took control, bombing monster drives when it counted and showing deft touch around the greens, eventually pulling two holes clear through 16 (playing as the 34th hole).

Fittingly, the match was decided at hole 17, index 1. Shaun drove to the top left facing a 200+ metre approach down the hill. From the tee, Chantha cut the corner leaving him a second shot of just over 100m. Shaun’s 5-iron soared towards the green finding the target, but then bouncing through and onto the back slope. Chantha’s approach found the green to the left, but with a long putt to stay in the match.

Shaun’s chip from only a few metres out landed next to the pin, stone dead. Chantha’s attempted birdie putt slid by… and a new champion emerged. It’s said that to be a champion, you have to beat a champion. Shaun Dawson did it by beating two.

Mens A1

Jonathan Pearce def Noah Choi at the 37th hole.

A close match that went the distance and then some.

Noah was the finalist in last year’s inaugural appearance of this division, and this year qualified 5th with Jonathan 7th.

There was little between the pair all day with 2 holes being the greatest margin. Jonathan was 1 up through 18, but Noah kept him within reach across the back stretch, with the pair square after 36 holes.

The playoff started at the 3rd due to course commitments.

Jonathan found the centre of the fairway, but Noah zigzagged across the fairway as the gallery arrived and the tension grew. Jonathan’s one-handed chip onto the green for three set him up for a hard-earned win, after Noah’s third shot went long.

Mens B

Andrew Ross def Ian George 4&3.

This final brought together the top two qualifiers, Ian George and Andrew Ross.

The two were square through 18, but as the pressure grew, Andrew’s game held firm.

In the end, he came home comfortably for his first championship.

Mens C

Sham Sharma def Ted Wilson by 9 after 18.

Sham was in solid form today after a confident run through qualifying rounds and the earlier finals.

Once again, his knack for rising to the big occasions came to the fore.

Try as Ted did, the match had slipped well from his grasp by 18 and he conceded there.
