2023 Pennant, Cleek & Hickory

North Adelaide fielded sides in three women’s pennants competitions this year: A3, Cleek 1 and Hickory.

As tough as the competition was, the teams found themselves battling the toughest opponent of them all: Mother Nature, with bad weather forcing the cancellation of 2 rounds in the Cleek and 1 in the A3.

Consequently, those matches were squared… and the results often went against our sides at times when wins were both needed and highly likely given the opponents.

A3 (Captain – Wendy O’Connor)

North Adelaide went into the competition with high hopes after finishing runners-up last year but the loss of key players early in the season left the side understrength for the first few rounds. As a result, the leaders were always just out of reach.

An upset win over Kooyonga at Kooyonga in round 6 gave them a glimmer of hope, but a close loss in the final round snuffed out their finals chances once and for all.

In the end, they finished 6th courtesy of a single win and two draws. Experienced campaigner, Merrilyn Middleton was the best performed with 4 wins, while Joy Shin notched up 3.

Cleek 1 (Captain - Deirdre Bennett)

The defending champions were on the back foot from the outset, with round 1 fogged out followed by a loss, then a draw at home, followed by a second cancelled match at Blackwood in round 5 that they could have won.

Nevertheless, the team soldiered on doggedly and found itself with a tenuous grasp of a finals place in round 7 courtesy of an upset win at Kooyonga, only to see them relegated to 5th, missing out by a single game on the cumulative win-loss score.

Dee Bennett was the top gun with 3 wins, followed by Fiona Chan with 2. The team also welcomed Yeon Hee (Julia) Choi and Eunjin Park to pennants competition.

Hickory (Captain – Carolyn Mroczek)

In a short 4-match season, every win had to count for the Hickory team.

However, a heavy defeat in round 1 and a one-game loss in round 2 left them in the wake of the leaders, despite making amends with two good wins to close out the minor round. The team then had the unenviable situation of having to host the competition at North Adelaide, while themselves having the bye and having their fate determined by other results.

In the end, 4th place overall and not enough for a ticket to the big dance. Carla Hirst was the best-performed with 2 wins.

Thanks to the players for braving adverse weather which prevailed across the season and the three captains for organising their sides.

SA Pennants Round 2

Womens: A3 & Cleek 1

A gloomy Monday was reflected in our results today with both our women's pennants sides (A3 and Cleek 1) going down 4-1.

Our understrength A3 side was at Royal Adelaide today for the Grand Final rematch with West Lakes, and sadly it was the same result.

The absence of both Se Young Jung and Young Mi Ko overseas is being sorely felt, with only Carolyn Coleman notching a win to the tune of 3&1.

Judi Wakeling had the unenviable task of playing Dianne Biebrick, who may well continue haunting us like Banquo’s ghost given Di's 6&5 victory.

At Flagstaff Hill, our Cleek 1 side’s championship defence faltered with a heavy loss after last week’s abandoned matches.

Back from leave, Laifong Cheong was our only winner with a solid 6&4 victory.

Our A3 side sits 6th on their ladder and Cleek 1 8th… but it’s still early days, with 5 rounds still to play.

SA Pennants Round 1

NAGC Women did quite well considering our two top players Se Young Jung and Young Mi Ko are in Korea.  So everyone had to play up a few spots each

Carolyn Coleman played at 1 spot and lost 3-2 so was happy with that.

Judi Wakelin did well at 2 spot taking the match to 13.. 6-5 to go.

Mi Park won very well winning 3 spot 7-5

Joy Shin lost  number 4 spot 5-4

Mez Middleton did a sterling job winning 4-3

Not bad at all with everyone playing 2-3 spots higher than usual against handicaps of 8-15
