2021 Bonnar Cup Results

GA Pennant match report – Sunday June 20th 2021 - Round 7
Going into today’s match versus Blackwood at Tea Tree Gully we still had a chance of making this year’s finals. Our hopes faded with a disappointing 4.5 to 2.5 defeat.

The details as follows:
Ian Scriven (4 and 2) and Steve Darch (1 up) were our victors, Chantha Kong halved his match and others making up the team were: Shaun Dawson, Shane Leathem, Chris Watson and John Filmalter.
Thanks to Barry Smith who caddied for Shaun, who in his debut season as a Pennant golfer was given the honour of playing in the number one position, well done Shaun. Merv Davies pulled the bag for John Filmalter and it was good to see Ryan Sewell on the course caddying for Shane.

Next week we are hosting the event, and we take on Tea Tree Gully. Former NAGC members Claudio Sequeira and Jason Mylroie will be in their team, so come along and support our team and help us to get a result. Tee time is at 10:00AM.

Round 6 Bye

GA Pennant match report – Sunday June 6th 2021 - Round 5
After our great win last Sunday against the previously unbeaten The Vines, we headed off to The Grange to face the previously unbeaten Glenelg. We came away with a creditable 4.5 to 2.5 loss. Previous rounds indicated that the boys from the bay would give us a good hiding, but that wasn’t the case.

The details follow:
Our winners were, Chantha Kong (1 up), Chantha being dormie four, decided he liked the course that much he would like to play all 18 holes, Ian Scriven won 5 and 3, and Shane Leathem halved his match after being five down with six to play, a great achievement.
Shaun Dawson put up a great fight with Kade Bryant (son of Adam) only to lose at the 18th hole. Alex Martinson, Chris Watson and Corey Fawkes lost four and two, four and three and four and two respectively.

Thanks as ever to John Rowe and Dave Carr for caddying duties, non playing member Steve Darch who caddied for Shaun and Peter Stolz who turned up to support the team.

Next week we have a week off for our dear Queen’s birthday, but on the following Sunday we face Blackwood at Tea Tree Gully with a 12.10 tee off from the first tee.

And finally …. Thanks to Barry Smith who caddied for Shane who came back from five down to halve his match. Barry, being Barry, claimed the halved match as his own. Caddying with a sore back after lining up a putt on the practice round at The Grange last Friday. The sore back came about lining up the putt, Barry fell backwards into the green side bunker much to the humour of his playing partners.

GA Pennant match report – Sunday May 30th 2021 - Round 4

After three defeats out of three in this season’s Bonnar Cup, we headed off to the delightful Kooyonga for our round four match versus the previously undefeated The Vines. The report will start by ‘how good was that!!!!! A fantastic 4-3 win by our team.

On the practice ground before play there was an optimistic feel in the air and a nothing to lose attitude in our golfers, El Presidente Peter was there, bursting with pride from his recent President’s Cup win, along with his first lady Krys.

The match details are as follows:

The only change from last week’s team was the inclusion of Chantha Kong at the expense of Steve Darch. Chantha lost his match 4 and 3. Alex Martinson lost 3 and 2 and Shaun Dawson succumbed to the narrowest of margins, one down. Our winners were Ian Scriven (2 and 1), Shane Leathem (2 and 1), Chris Watson (2 up) and Corey Fawkes (2 up).

The developing team spirit that we have is highlighted by the fact that six non playing members of our squad turned up to support our team, so thanks to John Filmalter, Simon Welsh, Dave Renner, Peter Stolz, Steve Darch and Captain Barry Smith. Steve and Barry caddied for Chantha and Alex respectively.

After golf we all gathered at the halfway house to celebrate our victory (we finished at the ninth green), declined the $5.50 one sausage and a piece of bread that was on offer and went home happy (hungry, but happy).
Next match is versus Glenelg at The Grange, next Sunday (June 6th), with a 12.10 start from the 10th tee.

And finally…. both Peter (Sahb) and I think we were the difference today, Peter caddying for Chris and I was on Corey’s bag. Corey made me nervous though, six up with four to play and winning 2 up. Corey loves playing at Kooyonga, and says he was determined to play all 18 holes (a likely story).

GA Pennant match report – Sunday May 23rd 2021 - Round 3

After two defeats out of two in this season’s Bonnar Cup, we headed off to Blackwood for our round three match versus The Grange.  In a much changed team line-up, we still lost 7-0.

The details are as follows:

Alex Martinson (4 and 3), Ian Scriven (2 and 1), Shaun Dawson (1 down), Shane Leathem (3 and 1), Chris Watson (1 down), Corey Fawkes (3 and 2), Steve Darch ( 6 and 5).

A very special mention to John Rowe, who was regretfully missed off last week’s match report.  John is a fantastically enthusiastic supporter of our club and should be (and is) appreciated by everyone.  Our club needs more people like John to help and support us.

Thanks to Captain Barry Smith and Chantha Kong who were rested for this match, but still turned up and caddied for Shane and Ian respectively.

Thank you to Blackwood GC who hosted the event, a very nice after golf curry and rice was served to ensure we didn’t go home hungry!

Next match is versus The Vines at Kooyonga, an 11.15 start from the 10th tee.  Please try to be there to support our team.

GA Pennant match report – Sunday May 16th 2021 - Round 2
With our local rules printed off, we headed to Glenelg to face the team from Kooyonga, who in round 1 defeated a strong Tea Tree Gully line up, 5.5 to 1.5.

We found the going very tough and succumbed to a heavy defeat, 7 nil.

Our golfers and scores were: Alex Martinson (2 down), Simon Welsh (3 and 2), Shaun Dawson (6 and 4), Dave Renner (6 and 5), Barry Smith (4 and 2), Steve Darch (2 and 1) and Chantha Kong (1 down).
Thanks to reserve Ian Scriven for being there, along with other non-playing squad members who came along to support their team mates.

Caddies Dave Carr and Merv Davies were there adding their support along with Taj Darch.

After golf, we all went home early because we were hungry!

Next match is at Blackwood this Sunday, where we face The Grange with a 12.10 start on the first tee.

GA Pennant match report – Sunday April 9th 2021 - Round 1
We started our Bonnar Cup campaign against our old adversaries Regency Park, playing on their home course. We came away with a narrow 4-3 loss.

This season we have a 14 man squad to pick from and went into this match with three members making their debuts for the club in GA Pennant golf, Dave Renner, Shaun Dawson and Steve Darch. Dave produced a fine 2-up victory playing at number one, Shaun won 3 and 2 and Steve lost 2 and 1. Steve was up against the formidable, two time Lord Mayors’s Trophy winner, Stuart Kopania. Our other winner was Alex Martinson 3 and 2. Making up the team were: Captain Barry Smith, Chantha Kong and John Filmalter.

Reserve for the day was Simon Welsh, thanks to Simon for caddying for Barry during the round. Also thanks to Dave Carr who caddied for Chantha and Merv Davies who pushed John’s buggy. Non-playing team members Chris Watson, Peter Stolz and Shane Leathem were there as spectators.

Highlight of the day was Barry Smith holing out from 130 meters for an eagle on the ninth hole, Barry says 130 meters others say more like 100 meters, next time you see ask him about it, I’m sure he’ll tell you. Rumour has it the whole world knew about it as he took great delight in telling everyone, it was even on the ABC 10AM news!

Next match is versus Kooyonga at Glenelg with a 12:10 start, please come along and support your fellow members.
